Flight Instruction

Yes, a pilot license is required to fly a hot air balloon. They are Federally Certified aircraft governed by the Federal Aviation Administration (the FAA) – same as an airplane. There are two levels of balloon pilot ratings – the private pilot and the commercial pilot. Go Lightly hosts private and commercial ground schools and many of our pilots are available for flight instruction in our equipment or yours.

Each rating requires you to pass a written test, oral test and a flight check upon completion of the minimum flight requirements. Balloon pilots come from all walks of life. Anyone with the desire to fly a balloon can become a pilot. Our staff can assist you in achieving your ballooning goals – whatever they may be.
